Why are we planning close road trips during the Weekly Menu 06.12.22? Well, the price of gas is a pretty determining factor, but the fact is, exploring close to home is awesome. We’re pretty centrally located here in Erieland – Buffalo, Cleveland and Pittsburgh are all within a two hour drive. We can use our cute overnight bags instead of the large marge suitcase. (Affiliate links precede and follow. See Disclaimer Page for details.) Getting to any of those places won’t break the bank, and all have stellar museums, zoos, even amusement parks. And the nearest and dearest reason for visiting any of them?

The food.

We almost always know where the next meal we’re going to eat is coming from, and travelling ramps up this obsession to new levels. It drives Bert nuts, of course, because he doesn’t generally eat breakfast or lunch. I, however, am more of a three square a day kind of gal. The boysies follow my lead. We talk about lunch at breakfast and dinner at lunch. And, as you might imagine, breakfast at dinner. Especially when we’re out of town.

So heading to Buffalo, for instance, we’re planning on some wings, naturally, but that’s not the only thing Buffalo has going for it. Have you heard of Beef on Weck? It’s a fabulous sliced beef sammie on a kimmelweck roll. There are multiple places that claim the best one, so a taste test is probably in order. Buffalo also has some amazing Italian food.

A Pittsburgh trip isn’t the same without a Primanti’s Sandwich

But that’s not the only claim to fame. How about a Pittsburgh Salad? (It’s not a real healthy salad, but it’s a thing.) And pierogies. Nothing beats this dumpling for comfort food. And it’s everywhere – high end restaurants and diners, even food trucks. You definitely don’t want to miss these.

Cleveland is the perfect place for Lake Erie Perch. Some of the best around is just outside of Cleveland at Brennan’s Fish House. Even non-fish eaters love these little filets that are perfectly breaded and fried. Apparently they have other seafood too, but I wouldn’t know how that tastes. I don’t vary my order much.

Cleveland is also where the famous Polish Boy Sandwich originated. That’s a large link of kielbasa smothered in fries, coleslaw and barbecue sauce. Yum. Interesting how so many iconic items are comfort foods. It’s making me hungry!

Here comes the Weekly Menu 06.12.22!

We’re eating summery during the Weekly Menu 06.12.22. Our big Sunday dinner is a healthier version of a family classic. Grilled Chicken Cordon Blue isn’t breaded and fried. We stuff a chicken breast with ham and cheese and Bert takes it to the grill. It’s phenomenal, if I may say so myself. And the cheese sauce makes it a little decadent. The Pretzel Toffee Bars are a super simple candy-like dessert. They won’t last long.

I love hot dogs. This week, we’re mixing them up with a Mexican flare. And did you know that Mexicans eat a fair amount of potatoes? I was watching one of my favorite cooking shows (Pati’s Mexican Table), and Pati Jinich told me so. We do a lot of rice as a side dish with Mexican, so the roasted potatoes are a welcome addition to the menu. Especially since we’re having fried rice the day before.
