WEEKLY MENU 01.16.22

We’re planning on comfort food during the Weekly Menu 01.16.22 because the ice is finally settling in.

The ice on Lake Erie has finally begun to form, so we’re leaning heavy into comfort food during the Weekly Menu 01.16.22. We love ice around Erieland – and not just because it indicates that many of our winter activities are gearing up. Ice is an important part of the eco-system. Presque Isle is a natural peninsula that juts out into Lake Erie and forms the bay that the city was designed around. But without ice, and the subsequent ice dunes, Presque Isle takes a beating from the winter storms. And the storms are much worse without ice cover. Think Lake Effect snow.

There was no ice on the bay on Monday. By Wednesday, there was a bit of coverage, and almost the whole bay was covered. By Thursday morning, the news reported that the ice thickness was not enough to keep people from falling through. Because, of course, there were Erieites out there with their ice drills.

People are nuts.

And they absolutely adore ice fishing. The post picture shows ice huts that are pulled out onto the frozen lake and remain throughout the season. The huts keep their inhabitants a bit warmer – they cut the wind, and the users may even have a heater in there. The more common sight for ice-fishermen on Lake Erie and the bay looks like this:

That hut in the background? That’s much more common around here. You can buy them on Amazon, and they pop up (and more importantly, down) so you can use them wherever you want. (Affiliate links follow – see Disclaimer Page for details.) I kind of want one for the back yard.

My problem with the tiny houses and the ice huts is that I’d fall asleep in there and wake up floating free in the middle of the lake. I know, I know. I might possibly read too much so my imagination gets the better of me. My other problem is that I might actually CATCH something in there. Like a fish. No thank you.

Weekly Menu 01.16.22

What does ice have to do with the Weekly Menu 01.16.22? Comfort, baby. We’re having easy stuffed, roasted chicken for Sunday dinner and keeping it going all week. Don’t tell anyone, but I use boxed stuffing for the chicken. I make it according to the package directions and zhuzh it up a little bit with some thyme, pepper and some shredded cheese. I put in the roasting dish in little piles and drape the chicken breasts over the top. Voila! Thirty minutes at 350 degrees later, I have a beautiful, Sunday night worthy meal.

Noodles pretty much scream comfort, but Bert isn’t a huge fan. We’re trying a little something new on Monday with the drunken noodles. Sadly, there isn’t any alcohol in the dish at all. Apparently they’re a big late night (after hitting the bars) feast. They are made with rice noodles though, and Bert loves himself some rice, so maybe…

We’re prepping Chicken Fra the normal way then popping it into a hollowed out loaf of Italian bread and smothering it with a bit of provolone and mozzarella. We’ll eat that in front of a Penguins game. With a fork. Yum-mee.
