Easy Pretzel Bites: How to Win Football Sunday
Lord, these soft pretzel bites are simple: perfect for a Sunday spent watching a football game having a beer (root or regular). They are made using a tube of biscuit dough and are delicious with almost any side.
What gives pretzels their distinct texture and flavor is the bath they take in a solution of boiling water and baking soda. They only cook for about 10 seconds, but it’s enough to make them a little chewy. Because they are wet, they also hold the salt, another good thing.
If you’re looking for a fabulous little kitchen item to scoop these babies out of the boiling water, this spider strainer (affiliate link) is the perfect size.
I never, ever have pretzel salt. Luckily, kosher works pretty well, although if you have some fancy type you like, go for it.
We served Pretzel Bites with home made Honey Mustard (click for recipe) and store bought Horseradish Sauce. They really lend themselves to anything: cheese dip, French onion dip, ketchup, straight mustard… you get the idea.
Impress everyone with your own “2-2-1-1 cheese sauce”:
Melt 2 tablespoons of flour in 2 tablespoons of butter and whisk for about a minute. Add 1 cup of milk, stirring occasionally. Once the mixture thickens up, remove from heat and add 1 cup of shredded cheese. A dash of cayenne adds a nice heat.
The price on these biscuits in Erieland at the time of posting was $.69 a tube – which works out to a little less than 2 cents for each pretzel bite.
Go hog wild – get two tubes!
Easy Soft Pretzel Bites
Ingredients
- 1 tube Homestyle Tube Biscuits (7.5 ounce size)
- 1/4 cup Baking Soda
- Kosher Salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
- Remove biscuits from tube and cut each one into quarters. Roll the pieces into balls, pinching the bottom a bit to seal.
- Bring 4 cups of water to a boil in a medium size pot over high heat. Add baking soda.
- Add balls to the water- baking soda mixture. Remove when they float to the top and place on a sprayed baking sheet. Continue until all balls have been boiled.
- Sprinkle kosher salt (or your favorite coarse salt) on top of the bites before baking.
- Bake for 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving with your favorite dipping sauces. We used honey mustard and horseradish sauce, but cheese sauce is a real favorite as well.
Play ball! (Or something like that) ♥
