The phone on this post is even a little older than I am, but it sure evokes some fun memories of how time has changed. A good friend of mine growing up (hi Sue!) had the coolest thing ever at her house: a Party line. What? You’ve never heard of a party line?
A party line (multiparty line, shared service line, party wire) is a local loop telephone circuit that is shared by multiple telephone service subscribers.[1][2][3]
Nearly three-quarters of Pennsylvania residential service in 1943 was party line, with users encouraged to limit calls to five minutes.[9
Party lines provided no privacy in communication. They were frequently used as a source of entertainment and gossip, as well as a means of quickly alerting entire neighbourhoods of emergencies such as fires,[7]

The first time I picked up the phone to call home to beg a ride, I heard people talking. I panicked, because we were (supposed to be) the only ones in the house. Sue explained about party lines, which I thought was pretty awesome. By that point I was already a dab hand at picking up the phone handset quietly and eavesdropping on my brothers. The knowledge to be had!
Eavesdropping was discouraged, sadly.
When I was growing up, we’d avoid answering the phone. With ten of us in the house, chances were slim it was for you. Now we avoid answering the house phone because it’s almost always a telemarketer. The more things change…
We’re celebrating Sunday with an Italian dinner. We’ll start with an Antipasto Platter put together with real Italian deli meats, olives and artichokes. Our Pasta Sauce recipe will be the base of our main course. We’re adding in true Italian sausage and meatballs. Bucatini is like spaghetti on steroids – thick, fat and hearty. I’m making me hungry!
We’re pressing the crock-pot into use multiple times this week. The Shredded Chicken Joes are an old favorite that are a chicken-y riff on Sloppy Joes. They’re a bit better for you, and are super easy to make. Soup Friday we’ll make Chicken Fiesta Slow Cooker Soup. It’s hearty and delish.
