WEEKLY MENU 09.20.20

The Weekly Menu 09.20.20 starts out with a little Ying/Yang meal: healthy grilled chicken with decadent Garlic Fettuccine Alfredo. You know what they say – “All things in moderation, even moderation.”

Check out the final lines in the post for a little secret…

I usually attribute that quote to my idol Julia Child. I heard her say it many times, and she seemed to live it out pretty well. That exact phrase was actually said by Oscar Wilde, but it is strongly influenced by Hesiod (I never heard of him either).

The essential thought is found in the work of the Greek poet Hesiod (c.700 bc), ‘observe due measure; moderation is best in all things’, and of the Roman comic dramatist Plautus (c. 250–184 bc), ‘moderation in all things is the best policy.’

Why a bulldog on our menu this week?

I just love them. Why? I love bulldogs because they look rough and tumble and they symbolize pluck and determination. The underbite and solid stare make for a surprising regency. They’re beautiful in their very ugliness.

Plus they’re short. I like short. I’m certainly not alone in my admiration:

As a Mascot

A Bulldog is the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps, and many bases have their own mascot on base.

Mack Trucks use the bulldog as their hood emblem.

Thirty-nine American universities use a Bulldog as their mascot including GeorgetownButlerCSU Fresno State,[33] Drake,[34] Gonzaga,[35] North Carolina A&TMississippi State,[36] Louisiana TechYale,[37] The Citadel[38] South Carolina State,[39] Georgia,[40] University of Redlands[41] and the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Do we have a bulldog?

Or any dog? Nope. Sometimes I lean heavily that way, then I see someone walking a dog with one hand while holding a plastic bag of poop in the other, and I quickly lean the other way. I did my BM duty when the boysies were little, thank you very much.

If you want to really melt inside a little, check out this puppy. He’s the cover on my 50+ Epic Gift Ideas (A Fabulous Christmas Guide) – but he is NOT one of the gifts. I promise.

I know Meatloaf Monday is a little trite, but the weather has been cooler around here, so it’s a perfect choice for a Monday. Admit it – it sounds delish. We don’t mind that the kitchen is being warmed up by the oven, and we have leftovers for sandwiches for days. (Yep. I do make a big loaf.)

We’re trying a riff on a Pioneer Woman recipe I saw the other day: Miracle Mango Salsa Chicken. Her recipe uses Mango Salsa, which sounds great in theory, but wouldn’t go over spectacularly well here. (In our house – not Erieland. It might go over great in Erieland, generally.) Mango itself is a little bit of an issue, but the bigger problem is the sweetness. We’re a big savory group. I’m going to use our favorite regulation salsa in place of the mango, and follow the recipe otherwise.

Thursday, I’m going to try (again) to duplicate one of my Mother-In-Law’s recipes that Bert adores. Sausage patties are cooked in a tomato based sauce in the crockpot (affiliate links follow – see disclaimer page for details). It doesn’t seem like it would be that difficult, but I’ve been trying to make it, unsuccessfully, for nigh upon 27 years.

A recipe would help.

Unfortunately, Dolly isn’t with us anymore. I’ve got a couple new ideas. We’ll see how it goes.

I’ll let you in on a little secret: we’re not actually having Chili on Friday. It’s my birthday. This Chef’s choice? We are headed out for dinner. The BIG question is what kind of cake I’m going to have. Tell me your favorite in the comments – help a sister out.
