National Peanut Day is on Friday (September 13th) on the Weekly Menu 09.08.24, but we’re bringing the legumes into play all week. I thought I knew all about the fabulous peanut, but I was completely unaware of how it grows. It’s called a ground nut because the seeds are created when the plant grows a flower that burrows back into the ground. The seed grows from there. Did that make sense? If not, check out this time-lapse video. It sums it up.

More info about peanuts than should be legal:

  • There are over 500 peanuts in every 12oz jar of peanut butter.
  • Two US presidents were peanut farmers (Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter)
  • There are six cities named “Peanut” in the US, and they’re located in California, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia.
  • Goober” is a nickname for peanuts and comes from “nguba” the word for peanut in the Congo.
  • Peanuts are a great source of protein (25g per 100g serving) and contain tons of healthy nutrients, dietary minerals (magnesium, manganese, phosphorus), antioxidants, dietary fiber, and vitamins (B and E).
  • The more popular peanuts are in a place, the fewer peanut allergies there are.
  • Arachibutyrophobia is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. Doggies don’t usually have a problem with this.
  • For some reason, there is a Guinness World Record for how far a person has thrown a peanut. If you care, Colin Jackson holds that title with a distance of 124ft, 4inches.
  • There are four different types of peanuts! (Runner, Virginia, Spanish, and Valencia)
  • The average American eats more than 6lbs of peanuts and peanut butter products a year.
  • The phrase “peanut gallery” comes from the 1800’s when people sitting in the audience upper levels of stage productions would throw peanuts at performers if they didn’t like what they were seeing.

The suspense is probably killing you – how and where are we incorporating peanuts?!?! Well, we have plenty of options – sweet peanut treats are a family favorite. Number one on the list is:

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chunk Cookies

another fave is:

Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Pie

This recipe includes directions for an oreo crust, but a graham cracker and pretzel crust would be divine as well.

We go savory, too, of course. Want to mix up your burger? Top it with

Montreal Peanut Sauce

And a fabulous dish that can be either a side or a vegetarian main:

Asian Peanut Noodles

“Sloppy Joes” appear on the menu twice this week—and neither have any peanuts in them. It’s a weird week, and the recipes couldn’t be more different, so we figured it would be okay. One is Italian-based ground beef, and the other is a tangy-sweet shredded chicken-style sammie.

A lot of Asian recipes incorporate peanuts, which is the way we’re heading for Sunday dinner.

Without further ado, here’s the menu!
