Can you decipher the post picture for the Weekly Menu 06.09.24? It’s (part) of a Formula 1 helmet! How does F1 work into the Weekly Menu 06.09.24? It’s been a year since the boysies went to Montreal for a race weekend. Since then, Bert and I have traveled to wonderful Montreal to see what they were raving about.

What is Formula 1?

Formula 1 (F1) is a prestigious, high-speed car racing sport known for its sophisticated technology, top-tier engineering, and highly skilled drivers. Here’s a breakdown of what it’s all about:

  1. The Cars: F1 cars are single-seater, open-wheel vehicles that are incredibly fast and aerodynamic. They’re designed for speed and agility, with engines that can rev up to around 15,000 RPM and speeds exceeding 200 mph. There are a maximum of twenty cars in each race.
  2. The Teams: There are multiple teams (constructors) in F1, each building and racing their own cars. Famous teams include Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren. Each team has two drivers.
  3. The Drivers: F1 drivers are among the best in the world, requiring exceptional skill, reflexes, and physical fitness. Notable drivers include Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, and Fernando Alonso.
  4. The Races: The F1 season consists of a series of races called Grand Prix, held on different tracks around the world. These tracks can be permanent racing circuits or temporary street circuits, like the famous Monaco Grand Prix.
  5. The Championships: There are two main titles up for grabs each season – the Drivers’ Championship (for the best driver) and the Constructors’ Championship (for the best team). Points are awarded based on race finishes, with the most points winning the titles.

How long is the Season?

The Formula 1 season typically spans about nine months, starting in March and ending in November or early December. During the season, between 20 and 23 races, known as Grand Prix events, are usually held at various international locations. The exact number of races and the specific start and end dates can vary yearly based on the official calendar released by the sport’s governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). Each race weekend typically includes practice sessions, a qualifying session, and the main race, all spread over three days, usually from Friday to Sunday.

It’s still not as long as hockey. Just saying.

Montreal, Canada is where our boys went for their race weekend, because that’s the closest to us, plus Montreal is just so, so cool. But they had plenty of options!

Formula 1 races are held on five continents, with a significant number taking place in Europe, which is considered the heartland of F1. Here are the regions and some notable races:

  1. Europe:
    • British Grand Prix (Silverstone, UK)
    • Italian Grand Prix (Monza, Italy)
    • Monaco Grand Prix (Monte Carlo, Monaco)
    • Spanish Grand Prix (Barcelona, Spain)
    • Belgian Grand Prix (Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium)
    • German Grand Prix (Hockenheim or Nürburgring, Germany)
  2. Asia:
    • Japanese Grand Prix (Suzuka, Japan)
    • Chinese Grand Prix (Shanghai, China)
    • Singapore Grand Prix (Marina Bay Street Circuit, Singapore)
    • Bahrain Grand Prix (Sakhir, Bahrain)
    • Abu Dhabi Grand Prix (Yas Marina, UAE)
  3. North America:
    • United States Grand Prix (Circuit of the Americas, Austin, Texas)
    • Mexican Grand Prix (Mexico City, Mexico)
    • Canadian Grand Prix (Montreal, Canada)
  4. South America:
    • Brazilian Grand Prix (Interlagos, São Paulo, Brazil)
  5. Oceania:
    • Australian Grand Prix (Melbourne, Australia)

Each location offers unique challenges and characteristics, as the races are held in the city or area itself – not on an oval course like auto racing in the United States.

Monaco Grand Prix

Sometimes, the boys watch the races in the middle of the night, and sometimes, like this week, the main race is on Sunday at a reasonable time. For us, that’s 2:00 PM. The maximum race time is two hours, so that won’t blow the whole day. We’re going to eat a Canadian-inspired dinner with a snack during the race itself.

Weekly Menu 06.09.24

We’ll start with Bannock, a traditional Canadian fried flatbread, and then have some Steamies (Montreal-style hot dogs) accompanied by Poutine. French fries topped with gravy and cheese curds? I’m in. Nanaimo Bars have a chewy base, a sweet filling and chocolate topping. They are tasty but not too sweet. And we can eat all of this with a side of Canadian Old Fashioned Cocktails, which have a shot of maple syrup along with Canadian Whiskey.

We’re going meatless on Monday, ostensibly. I must admit that, more often than not, the Red Beans and Rice get a side of some grilled sausage. They make a perfect combo. Our sausage machine (Baby Boy) almost demands it.

Bert will work dinner a couple of times this week on the Blackstone. We got a silicone griddle mat/cover for the winter, which was a game changer. No more scrubbing rust every time we wanted to use it. I have to admit, although the learning curve was steep, I love the way Bert has mastered the griddle.

We’re using the crockpot several times this week – for the Red Beans, the Shredded Chicken Joes, and the Creamy White Chicken Chili. As always, the slow cooker gets more use during the summer than it does during the winter. I love soup, but I don’t want to heat the entire kitchen with it boiling away. Thank the Lord for the crockpot!
