WEEKLY MENU 03.06.22
We’re celebrating Cletus during the Weekly Menu 03.06.22.
Who is Cletus and why are we celebrating him during the Weekly Menu 03.06.22? I should preface this with the knowledge that we are not pet people. We had three dogs the entire time I was growing up, and all of them ended badly. Asphalt, our black mutt, got outside alone and fought with a much larger dog. Asphalt lost the battle. Cork, our first Old English Sheepdog basically went a little nuts and got nippy with all of us. And Sweets, our second (and last) Old English Sheepdog had a mass in his belly and had to be put down.
Keeping goldfish alive was a problem. Gerbil’s smelled. And turtles were dangerous for us, health-wise. (Apparently, you could get salmonella by kissing them. Not sure who was doing that.) I’m profoundly allergic to cats. We simply have no great pet experiences between the two of us.
Plus, I had my hands full keeping the house clean with three boys.
But, during the pandemic, Baby Boy went to college for an entire semester in his bedroom, and asked if he could add a fish into the mix for a little bit of company.
Well, we had to say yes to that.
Enter Cletus, Betta Fish extraordinaire: so blue, beautiful and sinuous. Baby Boy watched that fish for hours. And he took good care of him, even though cleaning out the bowl was a major undertaking. But then college stopped being online, Baby Boy left home again, and Cletus languished in the bedroom. Eventually, we felt so sorry for Cletus (Bert and I figured he was probably lonely up there) that we moved him into the living room and into a fancy glass bowl that better complemented our decor. And where we remembered to feed him.
Then Cletus sunk to the bottom of the bowl. Permanently.
We had a moment of silence after we flushed him, and again when Baby Boy got home for Spring Break. I joke, but it really bothered me, to be honest. I don’t think I could be a real pet Mama to a dog or a cat if Cletus’ passing hit me that hard. (Okay, it wasn’t THAT hard, but it did make me sad.)
The question now is whether we replace him or if we just leave the empty bowl on the book shelf in homage. I’ll let you know.
What’s for eats on the Weekly Menu 03.06.22?
We’re having a little break, weather-wise, early this week, so we’re putting a small ham on the grill for Sunday dinner. We’re having ham sammies on crusty rolls with Swiss Cheese and a side of pasta salad. Channeling spring in the hopes that it will come sooner rather than later.
Bert and I went to dinner at a friends home a few weeks ago, and in addition to ginormous steaks, they served a kale salad. AND WE LIKED IT!! Maybe we’ve changed. I found a pretty good looking kale salad recipe and we’re going to give that a shot. It calls for the kale to be soaked and massaged. That sounds like something that would make me a little easier to get along with too. Can’t hurt.
Bert is a rice guy, through and through. The way I love potatoes is the way he loves rice. I came across Tuesday night’s dinner in the AllRecipe magazine, and it looks like his kind of meal. The official name is Asopoa de Pollo, but it’s basically a chicken and rice stew. By Tuesday the weather will have gotten colder again, so it should hit the spot, comfort-wise.

Affiliate links follow – see Disclaimer Page for Details. I am an AVID reader, and have had my current Kindle since 2014 (!) I have always loved it – but I adore Kindle Unlimited, which I’ve only been using for a few years. In addition to being able to read as many books a month as I want (if they’re available in KU) I get three magazine subscriptions. Which is how I read AllRecipe Magazine. And Rachel Ray In Season. And People Magazine – which I would not read otherwise, but a girl has to have a little variety.
Kindle Unlimited is $9.99 a month, which would be worth it for just the magazines alone. Add in the fact that I’ve read 44 books so far this year (Murder Mysteries! Romance! Paranormal! Cook Books! Business! Self Help!) with probably 40 of them being KU, and the math is easy to do. The money I’m saving!!
