Our Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Menu couldn’t be easier – or more traditional. Sure, Corned Beef is always a good choice, but for something a little different continue reading. You can serve this meal for two people or twelve: increase the amount of beef and potatoes and you are set.  Bring out the drinks early and often and a perfect night will be had by all.

We celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day in a big way in Erieland.

So does the rest of the United States and much of the world. The only thing many people know about the Saint we are celebrating is that he was Irish. But was he?

Nope. Not originally.

According to the Confessio of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals; he lived there for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland.

Saint Patrick’s Day is observed on 17 March, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday. In the dioceses of Ireland, it is both a solemnity and a holy day of obligation; it is also a celebration of Ireland itself. Wikipedia

We sing this Traditional Irish Blessing during the masses at Saint Patrick’s Church here in Erie, Pennsylvania. It’s poignant in it’s very simplicity, and embodies both the sincerity and joy in the Irish people.

Growing up, we had corned beef and cabbage for Saint Patrick’s day and a few other special occasions through out the year (Usually Dear Old Lovable Dad’s Birthday) but we had boiled ham and cabbage a fair bit too. The best part of the boiled dinner was always the potatoes – I could eat those all day long! Of course, you’ll see a special place on this menu for potatoes too. If you’ve never tried Colcannon, please give that a shot even if you don’t try anything else.

Without further ado, here is the Saint Patrick’s Day Dinner Menu!
