Kitchen Shopping: New Top Five!

Did somebody say kitchen shopping? I did! I did!

I’ve never been much into kitchen shopping – I’m more of a buyer: when I identify a need, I head for the best outlet to find the same. Even before Covid, most of my shopping was online. I can find what I want, when I want it in the color or make or model that I’m looking for. I am also wildly influenced by the Instagram, and, lately, TikTok. Some of these items were presented there and are actually as good as the claims say!

I have a “Shopping Page” that has links for all the stuff that I really, really like. If I don’t love using it or wouldn’t recommend it, it isn’t on that page. All of these items below are new additions to that page, and will be available there once it’s updated. Without further ado, let’s get kitchen shopping.

The flour made it out of the freezer.

I do a fair amount of kitchen shopping based on Instagram suggestions. This is one of the big winners. I’m not much on clutter for the kitchen counter, so have never had cannisters for flour, sugar and the like, until now. These are fabulous – and I don’t care what they look like because they stay in the pantry. (Not that they aren’t cute, but they are not very decorative.)

They practically vacuum seal – and each one has a little something extra attached on the inside of the lid. The flour has a little scraper to make sure that your measuring cup is level. The sugar has a flip pour spout as well as a scraper. The brown sugar has a disc that you can soak in water so it keeps the sugar soft, and the confectioner sugar has a scraper and a dusting spoon. I haven’t decided what to use the little ones for, but I’m keeping my options open.

I have never had much luck with spice racks.

They spices are usually old when you get them, and they don’t always have my favorite herbs and spices. Plus they take up a ton of counter space.

I HAD to do something though – my spice cabinet was completely out of control. I apparently have a little spice addiction. I originally bought these little metal bottomed tins planning on putting them on the back of the stove, but they didn’t all fit, and the metal add on shelf I originally bought didn’t hold enough. Then I realized that a decorative metal chalkboard that I have hanging on the back door would work. I filled the tins with my faves and let them loose. I CAN FIND MY SPICES IN A FLASH!!

I’m a little late to the smoothy party…

But I’m here now, baby! I love a mid-afternoon smoothy with a scoop of my favorite protein powder, some Greek yogurt, a splash of milk and a handful of frozen blueberries. Super tasty, good for me and it goes great with an apple. I got sick of always cleaning the blender though, so I looked into these and fell in love. You can blend and drink in the same cup, and then pop the cup in the dishwasher. A to-go lid is a plus too!

I’m a big fan of “hot-soapy” but I use this constantly…

Growing up, Mom always told us to fill up the sink with “hot-soapy” water when we were doing the dishes, which I still tend to want to do. I have to think it through now, though, since we got a single, huge sink when we replaced the kitchen countertop. This handy little brush sits in a little bit of your favorite dishwashing liquid mixed with water, so when you move the brush up and down in it’s bowl, it picks up the perfect amount of soap to clean just about anything. Think of the water I’m saving!

I’m so civilized now.

I’ll admit it. I’ve been making my morning tea with water boiled in the microwave for years. When Bert and I went to Ireland, I was thrilled by the electric kettle in lieu of the ever-present in-room coffee makers, and decided I’d give one a try at home. I love this thing. I fill it up first thing, put it on to heat and putter around making Bert’s coffee and getting out the mugs, and voila! Hot water. It’s the perfect size to cover me for the first cup, and the second, and then the third. It works great for instant coffee too.
