National Sunglasses Day falls during the Weekly Menu 06.26.22. Didn’t know that was a thing?

The Weekly Menu 06.26.22 covers the big day – National Sunglasses Day falls on June 27th (this and every year!) The Vision Council created the day to celebrate the importance of wearing ultraviolet (UV) protective sun wear. I’m not going to lie – we wear them because they make us look cool.

Sunglasses have been around for a long time. The Chinese first created them in the 12th century (!). At that point, they were pretty crude (and not cool looking at all). Sun-googs as we know them were created in 1929, in a place that really needed them:

As the world ushered in the 20th century, the modern type sunglasses began to appear. They became quite popular when movie stars began using them to protect their eyes from the bright studio lights. In 1929, Sam Foster founder of the Foster Grant of Atlantic City began the mass production of sunglasses in America. His trade boomed after he sold the first pair of Foster Glass sunglasses on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City. By the 1930’s sunglasses had become a popular fashion trend in the U.S.A.

And we all use glasses full time. Back in the day, D went through 10 pairs of glasses in 2 years. The boys were all a little rough on googs, but D was especially problematic. So, the monetary commitment for prescription sunglasses was one that was not taken lightly. We figured that they didn’t need them until they started driving, and then we were all in. There’s the classic…

The “throw-backs”

And the ultra-cool aviators

I hope it’s sunny on the 27th!

We’ll be eating well, regardless. Monday is Italian night – with easy Baked Italian Sausage on penne pasta. Our side will be a simple Caesar salad using Creamy Garlic Parmesan Dressing – and some homemade croutons that I make from leftover hot dog buns. Yep. You read that right. The soft buns make the absolute best croutons. I cut them up, toss them with a little bit of olive oil, add some garlic powder and some dry basil and bake them at 425 degrees until brown. They are divine, and they won’t crack a tooth.

We’re back to using the crockpot a couple times this week – Tuesday is Trivia Night and/or Summer Lacrosse night, so the Swedish Meatballs get to hang out in the slow cooker until everyone gets home and eats.

Thursday is Sunset Happy Hour (don’t want to forget the sunglasses for that one!) so we’ll make the sloppy joe meat and pop it in a slightly smaller version of the crockpot so they’ll be ready when we are.
