Green Onion Ranch Dressing and Dip
Green Onion Ranch: now chunk up your dressing – the easy way!
Green Onion Ranch takes regulation ranch dressing to the next level. It is fabulous on salads – like the Cobb Salad pictured. Green Onion Ranch is also a perfect dip to serve with veggies. Tangy, creamy and fresh, it goes great with carrots and celery!
Ranch Dressing is a ubiquitous American thing:
In the early 1950s, plumber Steve Henson developed[3] what is now known as ranch dressing while working as a contractor for three years in the remote Alaskan bush. In 1954, he and his wife Gayle opened Hidden Valley Ranch, a dude ranch at the former Sweetwater Ranch on San Marcos Pass in Santa Barbara County, California, where they served it to customers. It became popular, and they began selling it in packages for customers to take home, both as a finished product and as packets of seasoning to be mixed with mayonnaise and buttermilk.

And the rest is history.
We aren’t reinventing the wheel here – our recipe calls for Hidden Valley Ranch powder (affiliate links follow – please see disclaimer page for more info).
One of my favorite pantry items is Buttermilk. I almost always have it in the fridge. It keeps well, and it works in this recipe as well as a host of others. I use it instead of butter and cream in my Weeknight Mashed Spuds, saving calories without sacrificing taste. I use it in baked goods too – it adds a little tang to Bisquick when used instead of milk for biscuits and pancakes. Do I drink it? Ummmm, no. But it is a great staple to have on hand.
You can use pre-made Ranch Dressing instead.
I think it’s a little thick, though, so thin it with some buttermilk or even a tablespoon or so of water before adding the green onions. It won’t be quite as good, but I won’t tell anyone.
Add the buttermilk, mayo, ranch seasoning and pepper to a small mixing bowl.
Whisk it well, then add the green onions.
Mix it together and refrigerate for an hour or so if you have the time. You can eat it after just a few minutes though.
Voila – Green Onion Ranch. Chunky and pretty!
This dressing is great on almost any salad. (Seriously. How pretty is it on this Cobb Salad?)
And everyone loves ranch dip with veggies…
