Labor Day Menu 2019
Our Labor Day Menu helps Celebrate the unofficial end to summer with a full meal deal – it’s time to party!
Labor Day is, sadly, the last of the Red, White and Blue Holidays of summer. While it’s not the actual end of summer – that doesn’t happen until September 23rd this year – it is the unofficial end. Kids are heading to school if they haven’t started already, and one last grilling party is almost required.
Labor Day in the United States of America is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the development, growth, endurance, strength, security, prosperity, productivity, laws, sustainability, persistence, structure, and well-being of the country. It is the Monday of the long weekend known as Labor Day Weekend. Labor Day is recognized as a federal holiday.

Labor Day Telethon
Growing up, the big draw of the Labor Day Weekend was the Labor Day Telethon. It was always a treat to see the parade of famous people that showed up to help Jerry Lewis make an absolute ton of money to help the Muscular Dystrophy Association. My favorite part was watching Jerry get more and more disheveled as the 21-1/2 hour marathon continued. That fun was followed closely with awe. Watching all the bigwigs of corporate America trying to out-give each other was impressive.
Although the telethon imploded in a big way, almost 2 BILLION DOLLARS was raised during it’s run between 1966 and 2010. The telethon was changed drastically at that point, and Jerry Lewis was ousted – even after he received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Poor guy.
Looks like we’re going to have to do something else this year!
How about a party? We can celebrate summer. Not that it’s over – that it’s ongoing, and we still have 4 weeks to go! Plus, the kids are going back to school so we’re getting into a slower, steadier rhythm. Erieland goes, goes, goes all summer. Once Labor Day hits, it slows down. Let’s enjoy it!
Labor Day Plan!
The Queso Bread Bowl feeds a crowd easily, so we’re starting with that. It’s fast and fun to put together. We’ll have that ready to go in the oven to start. We’ll also prep the chimichurri in advance, along with the Three Bean Rice Salad and the Zebra Cakes. A party has to be fun for the host too – and the best way I know is to have everything you can have done before hand, done.
We’re deviating a little bit on the plan with the grilling – we have to do that right before we eat. Bert will cook the chicken and the corn on the cob while we get out all the other food and toss the salad.
